Before applying for a policy, researching customer complaints about the insurer can tell you a lot and sway your final decision.
The NAIC compiles state-level insurance complaint data and makes it publicly available. You may see how many complaints have been filed against a company and how those numbers compare to other insurers of a similar size.

Among the many types of complaints filed with the NAIC online are the following:
Insurance for driving a car, whether for business or pleasure
Insurance for homeowners
Insuring one's life, either on an individual basis or as part of a larger group,
Medical coverage, whether through an individual policy or an employer-sponsored plan.

Several businesses sharing an identical name may appear in the search results. Here are some suggestions to help you choose the best name for your business:
Check one of your insurance policies for the name of the subsidiary of an insurer you already use.
Each subsidiary is associated with a certain state, as indicated by the NAIC. Your insurer's address, which can be found in the policy paperwork or on the internet, should match the subsidiary's state on the list.
On their websites, several insurance providers post their NAIC firm numbers. That should coincide with a digit in the database you consulted.
You can filter the results by choosing "closed complaints" once you locate the desired subsidiary.
Four different compliant reports can be filed with the NAIC. The two most helpful are these:
Counts of resolved complaints by complaint codes: Information is displayed, including the reported causes of complaints.
The Finalized Complaint Analysis: The complaint ratio reveals the insurer's relative complaint volume concerning its market share. Larger insurance companies may receive more complaints because of the larger number of customers they serve.
Closed complaint numbers by code" opens a menu where you can specify the codes you're interested in viewing data for. Choose your home state from the drop-down menu or "all" for a nationwide overview. Pick "Insured" from the second choice. Pick a year. To get a complete picture of the issues people are having, it's recommended that you use the prior year's report rather than the current one. NAIC When you click the "make report" button, you'll be presented with three distinct lists: Analysis of Coverage Complaints Complaints and their causes, Resolutions to complaints
After selecting the affiliate, it will show you how your insurer's response time to complaints stacks up against that of other insurers in the same size bracket.
Choose the coverage you're interested in viewing a report for. You may need some explanation. Car insurance for an individual is known as "private passenger" coverage, for instance.
Search by "group" if your health, accident, or life insurance comes via your workplace or "individual" if you're purchasing a policy on your own.
Selecting "make a report" will bring up a page with two tables and a graph in the middle. Here are a few things to keep in mind concerning this page:
The red number in the bottom right corner of the first table shows your insurer’s complaint ratio for that policy type.
The smaller the number, the better. Where the number is above the median, it indicates a greater number of complaints.
The insurance division of your state government might also save annual complaint records. NerdWallet conducted a study to determine the best states for obtaining insurance. From that page, you may find out if the state insurance department has online complaint information by selecting your state from the drop-down menu. Additionally, you can verify the licensing status of insurers and agents and register complaints with the insurance department in your state.
The NAIC releases industry-wide snapshots of the most common complaints and provides insurer-specific complaint percentages and numbers. You may find the links to these studies at the very end of the primary hub for consumer data. Here are the three reports: Objections and Justifications, Concerns, by Insurance Plan, Results of the investigation into the complaints
